  1. hello Andy
I have been listening to you videos, and you have just the tone am looking for, as I my self being a bass player would like to ask you on how I can get such a tone especially playing over songs.everything
just seems to blend with you meaning the bass standing out and the song just laying there in the background . could you give me tips on settings ,eq’s, recording ,etc am really struggling with my settings.

    Thanks Trevor from Amsterdam

    1. Hi Trevor, many thanks for getting in touch and for the kind words.

I think it all starts with the instrument and how it is set up. I have all my basses set up with low action and by someone that really knows what they are doing. I use Ken Smith strings on all my basses as I find them to be well balanced and have longer life than some other brands.
As far as playing goes I try to relax as much as possible and play with a relatively light touch in the right hand, even when playing slap technique.
I record my bass using an inexpensive audio interface – Focusrite 2i4 (There a newer versions which will be even better!) and I use Logic Pro X software.
Once I am happy with a take (sometimes it’s 3,4 or 5 attempts!) I then set about getting the levels I want. So…

Compression: I’m not a big fan of compression generally but a little bit goes a long way for bass! I use the Waves plug-ins and pick a compressor from there to add to the bass channel. Just the smallest amount can help tighten up the sound a little and there are some great presets to start with. I sometimes have a slightly stronger compression setting for slap technique to help tame the spike’s.

EQ: Most of the time I roll of all frequencies below 50hz to get rid of very low rumble that can muddy the sound a bit. I have a +2db boost at 100hz, -3db around 1-2k, and +4db boost around 6-8k for the ‘sparkle’. I roll off everything above 10k to avoid a ‘glassy’ tone. Again, these settings can change between basses and bass tone settings and also technique being used, but it’s a reasonable place to start.

If you want to email me directly I can share screen shots of settings if it helps..

      Thanks again Trevor

      1. Hi Andy
Thanks for your quick response !
and yes I would really appreciate it if you could share screen shots of your settings. I was looking at the WAVES plugin website and saw that there are loads of them WITH ONE DO YOU USE?.and last what is your email address so I can email you directly and perhaps send you some of my screenshot settings. Have a great day .Trevor

        1. Hi Trevor

Have emailed you directly with some suggestions..

    2. Good morning and apologies,

I’m trying to email or text Andy because I can’t download or access the purchases. It’s not going to my account, The page saying I don’t have an account. I purchased before so I have no idea what is going on. You can, I need help or how to contact Andy. Thanks

      1. Hi Clarence, thanks for getting in touch.

I have emailed you directly with some suggestions, let me know if it works out..

        Andy

  2. Hello Andy,

Thank you so much for your great Bass playing, you play wonderfully especially the R & B soulful funk! I ‘am a newbie at this, I just picked up playing Bass guitar and bought a (4 string)Toby by Tobias this passed July , and enjoying it a lot. I am curious to know if you do Tabs on music people request? The reason for my question is because there is a song on Youtube: J-Louis – Before You (Rachel Foxx Flip)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTM_6jS4Ilg

The song is 3:11 Minutes long but the bass playing starts at 40 sec. into the song and lasts for just a minute, but that riff to me is insane!! I’ve tried to make out what the tabs are with no success.

I just wanted to know if you can decode into tabs?

Let me know if you do and how much?

    1. Hi Millie, thanks for getting in touch and for the kind words!

Great that you have picked up the bass and that you are enjoying the journey so far. Yes I can score songs by request so will have a listen to the link you have provided and let you know a time frame/cost of getting this done. In response to your other message ‘Midas Touch’ should now be available for free download. I will email you separately about your request later on..

      Thanks again for your support

  3. Hi Andy,

Recently discovered your channel and store. Your covers and transcriptions are first rate. Awesome playing and accurate transcriptions. Are you familiar with the song “It’s In The Way That You Use It” by Eric Clapton. Such an awesome bassline by Laurence Cottle, I’m shocked that no one has done a tutorial on YouTube or a transcription. Would you be interested in transcribing this? If it’s not something that you would do for your normal channel, how much would you charge to do a transcription for me?

    Cheers!

    Eric

    1. Hi Eric

Many thanks for getting in touch and for the kind words! I hadn’t come across the Eric Clapton tune before but the bass work sounds superb. Laurence Cottle is one of the finest bass players and arrangers I’ve ever heard so it’s no wonder it sounds so good! I can certainly have a go at transcribing it and will email you directly about a price.

Thanks again for your support Eric

  4. Hello,

I can not find the page to register, how to create an account and then buy, download the tablatures, including the free ones?

    thank you
    Dom

    1. Hi Dom, many thanks for getting in touch!

There isn’t a way to create an account at this time, but it should be fairly straightforward to select the tunes you like and download them. Let me know if you still need assistance with it and I’ll gladly help!

      All the best

  5. Hi Andy,

A big thank you for these funk, disco, soul tracks that we find nowhere else for the most part.
    I bought almost everything …

Besides, I found you thanks to Slave.

We expect others, like “Tom Browne – Brighter Tomorrow” for example.

    Dominique

    1. Thank you so much for checking out the charts and your support Dominique, very much appreciated!

I love Tom Browne so will certainly have a go at ‘Brighter Tomorrow’ in the coming weeks..

      All the best

  6. Man… I am so happy I came across your YouTube videos and now your website. I’ve already purchased The Jones Girls “Nights Over Egypt” love that song and you did an excellent job with it. I was looking to see if you had the tab for “Do It Any Way You Wanna” by Peoples Choice, awesome bass line and would like to purchase it.
Hey Thanks again for your hard work.

    Russ

    1. Hi Russ, many thanks for getting in touch and for the kind words! So pleased the scores are helping you so far, if you have any questions about any of the markings just let me know and I’ll be happy to explain! “Do It Any Way You Wanna” is a great bass line, I’ll be sure to get round to that one at some point soon…I’m adding stuff all the time even if there isn’t a youtube video to match.
Keep an eye out over the next week or so and it should be on the website..

Thanks again Russ, happy new year and keep groovin’!

  7. Hey Andy, great playing and spot on transcriptions. Have you ever considered doing some Ohio Players? Perhaps song Heaven Must Be Like This- long version?

    1. Hey Ronnie, thanks for getting in touch and for the kind words! Yes I actually transcribed an Ohio Players tune for somebody not so long ago, it was a track called ‘Sweet Sticky Thing’. Great tune! I’ll have a look into your suggestion and see if I can get it together.

  8. Hello Andy,
I have always wanted to play bass guitar. I am a retired 60 year old and have bought myself a Fender Jazz bass and Fender P bass. I have plenty of time, now that I do not have to work and will be dedicating myself to learning and playing them. I can play some by ear , but I need tabs as I cannot read music. I have been watching multiple videos of bass players and you are one of the best bass players I have ever heard play. Your videos are very well made and the sound is excellent.

I have a request for a tab for “Be Encouraged with Reprise” by William Becton and Friends. I have included the link to the song. Could you please let me know how much you charge to transcribe the complete bassline in bass notation for the song.
I have several other tabs I am going to purchase from your website. Thank you Andy

  9. Hi Andy,
Great bass work here. I stepped in with your play along of ´big b, little b´ and could not found the tabs in your Shop.
    Are Thea anyway available?
    Thx from Bavaria
    Gerhard

    1. Hi Gerhard, many thanks for the kind words. The track ‘Big B, Little B’ was taken from this book:

      https://www.prestomusic.com/sheet-music/products/7206857–tom-kennedy-in-session-with-the-dave-weckl-band

The book doesn’t contain TAB, just standard notation but it is great to study from. Hope this helps you on the way Gerhard..

      All the best

      1. Hi Andi, that is, what I am looking for.
        Thank you again
        Gerhard

        1. My pleasure Gerhard, hope you enjoy it…there are some great pieces in there to play along to!

  10. Hi Andy, you are an awesome bass player. I listen to your videos on youtube and I just purchased four songs with tabs. How do you receive it through email or do you send it by mail?

    1. Hi Ed, many thanks for getting in touch. I have replied directly to your email with some solutions that will hopefully work for you. Please feel free to email back if you are still having some issues.

Thank you so much for your support!

      Andy

  11. Hi Andy, just discovered your site by accident, I had been looking for a Tab of ‘You’re the sweetest one’ by Luther for a while now. So just downloaded it thank you!

The tab I have been looking for everywhere is George Duke’s – Brazilian Love affair. I’ve been searching for it for years. Can you help??

    1. Hi Marko, many thanks for getting in touch and for your support. Glad you are getting on well with the Luther Vandross chart.

We are just in the middle of some refurbishment work at home so I don’t have a space to record videos/get charts together at the moment, but in the next 2-3 weeks we should be all done and I’ll be back to it. I will have a look at ‘Brazilian Love Affair’ as soon as I can and get it scored out.

      Thanks Marko, all the best.

  12. Hi Andy

Firstly thank you for your YouTube videos and bass tabs. Both are superb and a great help to me as I try to progress my bass playing.

I have purchased a number of the tabs that I just can’t find anywhere else – and also one or two where your tabs are way better than others.

Are you able to do requests for tabs? I would love to be able to play Japan’s version of ‘I Second That Emotion’ but I cannot get close.

    1. Hi Danny, so sorry for the delay in replying to you and many thanks for getting in touch. I am pleased that the charts are helping you with the playing! I’m a little behind with the videos and transcriptions at the moment as the live work has been busy and I’ve been on the road a lot, but hoping to have some more time coming up to start up with these again.
I’ll have a listen to the track and hopefully be able to get it down over the next week or so. Keep an eye out on the website and hopefully it’ll be there soon..

      Much appreciate the support Danny!

      Andy

  13. Hi,

Would it be possible to buy a 4-string version of ‘Fate’ by Chaka Khan?

    Thanks

    1. Hi Chris, thanks for getting in touch! I’ll have a listen to the track again and see if I can voice it suitably for 4 string, it can definitely be done but I just want to make sure it’s optimum and the best sound!

Give me a week or so and I should have it ready..

      Many thanks mate

      Andy

      1. Hi Andy,

Thanks for offering to consider this. Please let me know if this is something you’ve got time to do.

        Thanks again

  14. Back in Feb 24, 2021, Eric Frech asked for the Tab for “It’s in the way that you use it” by Eric Clapton. if you have transcribed that one, I would also be interested in purchasing it. Keep up the fantastic work Andy!

    1. Hi Jeff, Yes I transcribed that song for 5 string bass. If you prefer for 4 string I’ll need to make a few changes to adapt it but it can be done.
Many thanks for the kind words and support Jeff!

  15. Hi Andy, loved your Back Together vid on You Tube so bought the tabs but they seem to have disappeared and I didnt get chance to download Any ideas as I can’t seem to get them back without paying again
    Cheers in advance

    1. Hi Geoff, so sorry for the delayed response. I’ve been really busy with various projects and missed this.

Thanks for your support, much appreciated! Do you still have the auto generated email you received when you bought the chart first time round? If so you can click on the song title in that email and it will take you back to a direct download again, there is no time limit on the downloads so you should be able to get straight back to the original download link again.

Let me know if that works out, if not we can find another way..

      Thanks again
